Catholic bishop dies in Colombia

Bishop Hernan Alvarado Solano of the Apostolic Vicariate of Guapi, located southeast of the Colombian capital of Bogota, died on Jan. 31 at the age of 65.

The announcement was made by the Colombian Bishops’ Conference, but it did not specify the cause of his death.

Bishop Alvarado was born on Jan. 26, 1946 in Bogota. He studied at the Minor Seminary of Zipaquira, also located in Colombia and completed two years of philosophy at the Major Seminary of Ibague. 

He continued his theological studies at the Major Seminary in Bogota and obtained a degree in Social Communications at the Catholic University of Santiago in Chile.

Bishop Alvarado was ordained a priest at the age of 25 on Dec. 4, 1971, in the Diocese of Zipaquira.  He was named Apostolic Vicar of Guapi on Feb. 13, 2001, by Pope John Paul II.  He also was consecrated a bishop in the same year.
