Catholics in the Archdiocese of Matagalpa, Nicaragua are planning to pray 1,000 Hail Marys this weekend for the archbishop and several priests, who have been subjected to threats and physical attacks.

As a sign of solidarity, a group of Catholics in Matagalpa have formed a “support committee” for the clergy. They have invited the faithful to pray 1,000 Hail Marys on Oct. 22 during a prayer vigil.

One of the event organizers said the idea came after “seeing that the physical integrity (of the bishop and numerous priests) is being unjustly threatened for proclaiming the truth.”

Organizers invited the lay movements and all Catholics of the diocese to join in the vigil.

Last week, Archbishop Rolando Alvarez said he received a death threat over the phone. Father Mangel Hernandez of the Parish of St. Lucia was also threatened but not injured when a man faked a traffic accident in an attempt to hurt him.
